The transition period for the EU's Crypto Asset Market Regulation Act (MiCA) ended on July 1st, and European crypto users are reassessing whether their assets should remain on centralized exchanges or move to on-chain self-custody. At this juncture, BNB Chain has released an operational guide explaining how to transfer assets from exchanges to BNB Chain, emphasizing wallet security, test transfers, and mnemonic phrase safekeeping.

MiCA changes access method

MiCA now requires crypto companies continuing to provide services in the EU to hold a CASP license. Following the implementation of the new regulations, users are beginning to check whether their platforms can still offer trading, deposit, or earnings services in the EU.

BNB Chain describes self-custody in its guidelines as an alternative to exchange-custody. The key difference is that users retain control of their private keys, rather than having the platform hold them on their behalf.

The guidelines emphasize wallet security

This guide cautions that switching to self-custody does not eliminate risk; more responsibility will fall on the user. BNB Chain recommends users conduct small test transfers first, carefully store recovery phrases, and reserve a small amount of BNB in their wallets for on-chain transaction fees.

The guide also reminds users to avoid fake wallet apps, counterfeit cross-chain websites, and suspicious links spread through private messages or advertisements. After completing the asset transfer, users can directly connect to decentralized applications through their wallets.

The article lists the accessible functions and applications within its ecosystem, including token exchange, stablecoins, staking, lending, tokenized real-world assets, and perpetual trading, involving tools such as PancakeSwap, Venus, Lista DAO, Aster, DappBay, and BscTrace.

Exchange services have been adjusted.

This move comes as several European platforms adjust their services due to MiCA. The report mentions that Binance, having failed to obtain a MiCA license by the deadline, has suspended some services for EU users, including new spot trading, new deposits, new registrations, and some yield products; however, withdrawals are still possible.

Meanwhile, licensed platforms are also vying for users. Coinbase and OKX previously offered transfer incentives to Binance users before the regulations fully took effect. Regulatory requirements, asset custody methods, and platform availability are becoming key considerations for European users when choosing a service provider.

Stablecoins are also directly affected. Because Tether has not applied for MiCA authorization, USDT can no longer be listed on the order books of EU-regulated exchanges, giving compliant stablecoins such as USDC and EURC a more favorable position on licensed platforms.

The number of licensed institutions continues to increase

The European market has not shut down crypto businesses, but the ability of platforms to continue operating increasingly depends on obtaining authorization. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has expanded its MiCA (Migrant Authorities) list to 300 authorized entities, with 57 new service providers added just before the deadline.

The updated list includes banks, trading firms, and crypto companies that can leverage the MiCA (Military Access Control) mechanism to provide services across the EU. Ripple has also been approved in Luxembourg to enter the licensed market.

BNB Chain's latest offering is not a trading product, but rather a migration path for ordinary users. It aims to make the choice of "whether to hold assets themselves" a proactive one for European users, amidst tightening regulations and adjustments to platform services.
