BitMart has announced the initiation of the shutdown process for its trading platform. The cryptocurrency exchange, which has been operating for nine years, stated that it has stopped accepting new user registrations, deposits, and new orders. Spot and derivatives trading will end on August 26, and the platform will officially cease operations on January 31, 2027.

The company disclosed that withdrawals remain available, but with the mass exodus of users, identity verification, device verification, sanctions screening, and source of funds verification may slow down processing. The platform stated that it will proceed with subsequent arrangements in an "orderly and transparent" manner.

The shutdown timetable has been clarified.

BitMart stated that starting at 01:30 UTC on Sunday, the platform has stopped accepting new registrations, deposits, and orders. Users will still be able to manage existing assets over the next few months, but trading functionality will be phased out as planned.

  • New registrations, top-ups, and order placements have been suspended.
  • Spot and derivatives trading will end on August 26.
  • The platform officially ceased operations on January 31, 2027.

The platform did not explain the specific reason.

BitMart attributed the decision to "operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction," but did not elaborate on which factor triggered the shutdown. Public statements suggest that this is more of an overall business contraction than a sudden shutdown caused by a single event.

Following the news, the price of the platform token BMX plummeted. CoinGecko data shows that BMX has fallen by more than 80% in the past week, dropping to around $0.057, with its market capitalization decreasing to approximately $19.6 million.

The second platform to exit within a week

Shortly before BitMart announced its closure, perpetual contract trading platform BitMEX also announced its shutdown after 11 years of operation. The exits of these two established platforms demonstrate that consolidation continues within the cryptocurrency trading industry.

BitMart had previously suffered a major security incident. In December 2021, the platform's hot wallet was hacked, resulting in a loss of approximately $196 million, one of the larger exchange attacks during that cycle. The platform absorbed the user losses at the time.

Additional information:Decrypt quoted Echo Base CEO Roshan Dharia as saying that the digital asset industry is entering a more pronounced consolidation phase, and platforms that continue to survive will typically need to address operational pressures and secure capital support earlier.
