Meta has begun adding audio and video calling capabilities to the web version of WhatsApp, allowing users to initiate or receive calls directly in their browsers without needing to install the desktop client. This extends WhatsApp's calling capabilities from mobile and desktop applications to the web.

The web version adds a call entry point.

According to the latest update, the web version will add a Calls tab to display call logs and favorite contacts. Meta also stated that the web version will support some existing desktop features, including screen sharing and call emoji feedback.

This change improves consistency across devices. For users who are used to logging into WhatsApp on their work computers or temporary devices, the browser version allows direct calls, reducing the need to switch to a phone or download the desktop application.

Calls can be switched between devices

WhatsApp also launched a call forwarding feature. If a user receives a call on the desktop or web app first, they can switch to their mobile phone to continue the call without interrupting the current one.

Meta has also added a waiting room feature, primarily for group call scenarios. If someone else holds a group call link, the host can choose when to allow them to join or remove them. When creating a call link, users can enable the "Require approval to join" option, allowing potential joiners to enter a waiting state first.

Noise reduction and high-definition video speed-up are now available.

  • Supports background noise suppression, reducing noise in large spaces.
  • Video calls will switch to high-definition quality more quickly in the first few seconds after they begin.
  • In the past, some calls required a wait of several seconds before switching to high-definition video.

Meta recently opened up username reservations. Once this feature is officially launched, users will be able to initiate calls between different platforms using their usernames, without having to rely entirely on phone numbers or existing contact systems.
