Dogecoin was co-created by American software engineer Billy Markus, who previously worked at IBM and used the alias Shibetoshi Nakamoto, and Australian marketing professional Jackson Palmer, who was a product manager at Adobe in Sydney. Both founders left active development in 2014. The Dogecoin Foundation was relaunched in 2021 with a board of advisors including Billy Markus, Max Keller, Vitalik Buterin, and Elon Musk's representative Jared Birchall.

Dogecoin runs on its own independent Layer 1 blockchain using the Scrypt hashing algorithm for Proof of Work consensus, adapted from the Bitcoin Core codebase, with a block time of just one minute and no maximum supply cap. Dogechain functions as a separate Layer 2 solution with Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility to enable smart contract functionality, with DOGE serving as the native token across the entire ecosystem.

Dogecoin follows an inflationary model that produces 5 billion new DOGE tokens annually through mining rewards, with over 150 billion DOGE currently in circulation. This constant annual issuance means the inflation rate declines over time as total supply grows, and the design philosophy encourages spending and tipping rather than hoarding, with the community slogan being more DOGE means less hoarding and more spending.

Dogecoin operates on a decentralized community-driven governance model that relies on consensus among members without formal voting mechanisms. Elon Musk has been a major influential figure since 2021, triggering multiple significant price surges with his public statements. The Dogecoin Foundation provides guidance but has no binding authority, and the SEC and CFTC classified DOGE as a digital commodity in 2026.

Dogecoin is primarily used for social media tipping on platforms such as Reddit and Twitter, micropayments with low transaction fees, and charitable fundraising such as sponsoring Olympic teams and building water wells.
